Photo of a protester shot dead by police. Man, what a weird scene. The G-8 leaders are at the helm of a sinking ship.
The "Rape" issue of white-trash zine superstar Jim Goad's now defunct zine Answer me! now has a second life online. Considering the harsh and angry nature of the content you wouldn't have to be Nostradamus to see that Jim would eventually end up in jail for assaulting his now ex-girlfriend.

The Konformist has put up a list of the suppossed key words that Echelon, the giant electronic spy network operated by the U.S. and friends, scans phone calls, e-mails and faxes for. Hey, hackers, Kill the President, and jihad I can understand, but Furbys, Bugs Bunny, and the Weekly World News?

Things are heating up before the G-8 summit in Italy. Bombs have gone off in the offices of Benetton and at the television station owned by far-right Premier Silvio Berlusconi. The only clue to who was responsible for the bombing is some flyers left by a "Revolutionary Front" group. Could this be the work of an agent provocateur which justifies a far-left crack down or are our European comrades just more intense?

Bigotwatch.net on the surface looks like another anti-hate watchdog such as Hatewatch or The Southern Poverty Law Centre. A domain name registration query shows the owners to be The Foundation for Religious Tolerance whose web site www.religioustolerance.net is registered, not surprisingly, to The Foundation for Religious Tolerance. But what is surprising is that their address is 1334 L. Ron Hubbard Way Los Angeles, CA 90027 US! L Ron Hubbard Way? Gee, could it be a Scientology front? No wonder all the "bigots" are radical anti-Scientologists.

Media Guru Douglas Rushkoff on killing yourself online, Ideavirus, and CommerceCulture

ONLINE SUICIDE - People used to use the phone in the old days. The classic 'cry for
help,'backed up by a few dozen Percocet. Of course the new 'hook' is the webcam.
So now we'll get a few copycats. And then the story will become: 'do webcams
induce suicide?' 'is the temptation of an exhibitionist final exit too great
for America's teens?' Then, by the time Dawson's Creek does an episode
about it, we'll be onto something else.

IDEAVIRUS - pissed me off. As Mr. Media Virus, I'm the last guy who should
complain about ideas being copied and spread. But the IdeaVirus book is an awful
xerox copy of Media Virus, touted as a new idea. And it's an application of
Media Virus in the way that I detest: as a marketing tool.
I wrote Media Virus back in 1993/4 as an announcement/celebration that the
counterculture/alt.culture now had a tool as powerful as anything Madison
Avenue or the Corp Conglomerates had. Alas, though, it led marketers to
recast the theory as 'viral marketing' - all which I chronicled in Coercion.
So when Fast Company puts IdeaVirus on the cover of the magazine, as if it's
a brand new concept, I can't help but get irked. In spite of myself.
Because the MediaVirus virus, like any good media virus, will spread on its
own and mutate - with little regard for the intent and name of its creator.
That's the big secret about media viruses: you can't take credit for them.
They have no reason to hold onto the codons that contain your name.

COMMERCECULTURE - I think most of the world is missing the point and the
'enemy' when they blame capitalism or,worse, the United States for the problems
created by ruthless international corporate conglomerates, their 'international' ports
and assembly areas, andtheir puppet dictators. This concept may have been born in
the board rooms of America (although, actually, it didn't) but it has almost nothing to
dowith Americans.
Americans play their roles as the passive, mindless consumers of disposable
junk. But they are not materialists -- if we were, we would value our
materials, no? Americans are simply the first and easiest victims. By the
time Europeans and others wake up and realize that the enemy is not a
country at all, they will be fully incorporated into the Borg.
These are not nationalist problems. By keeping nation-states in conflict
(and keeping unions from working on an international level, as well) the
global corporate conglomerates can remain unchecked.
